BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: New Hampshire · approx. 43.2, -70.87 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Cocheco River, tidal head of navigation in the Piscataqua watershed

What turns up: Cotton-mill city dumps and privy pits: aqua and amber bottles, druggist and soda bottles, ironstone and redware sherds, clay pipes, and mill-operative buttons and coins along the Cocheco falls, old landing lots, and tenement back yards near the Cocheco Mills.

Access: Gray area.

New Hampshire framing: the Cocheco is tidal at Dover and its bed is public-trust water owned by the State, where removing historic artifacts is restricted. Riverbank and mill-yard uplands are private and need the owner's permission. State law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
