BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Maryland · approx. 39.65, -78.76 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on North Branch Potomac River and the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

What turns up: Canal-terminus and railroad-town debris along the Potomac and old canal basin: glassworks and brewery bottles, stoneware, clay pipes, and embossed local druggist and soda bottles near the boat basin, warehouses, and worker housing.

Access: Gray area.

The North Branch Potomac riverbed and the historic C&O Canal prism can hold protected submerged and archaeological resources; disturbing them is restricted under state law, and the canal corridor is largely federal parkland. Town uplands are private and need permission.
