BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Maryland · approx. 37.98, -75.85 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Little Annemessex River and Tangier Sound on the lower Chesapeake Bay; the state's premier oyster port.

What turns up: Heavy seafood-industry debris on ground literally built up of oyster shell: packing-house dumps, stoneware, tins, clay pipes, and embossed local druggist, soda, and beer bottles along the harbor and old cannery docks.

Access: Gray area.

The harbor bottom and the beds of the Little Annemessex and Tangier Sound below mean high water are state-owned public trust where artifact removal is restricted; submerged archaeological resources are protected. Cannery uplands and lots are private and need permission.
