Clarksville (Cumberland River)

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Tennessee · approx. 36.53, -87.36 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Cumberland River at the mouth of the Red River, at the old tobacco wharves

What turns up: Wharf mud and Red River mouth banks: hand-blown whiskey and tobacco-town bottles, stoneware, clay pipes, and steamboat-era debris; back-lot privies behind the historic warehouse blocks yield 1880s to 1900s bottles.

Access: Gray area.

The Cumberland and Red riverbeds below the ordinary high-water mark are state public-trust bottomland where historic artifact removal is restricted; the wharf and town lots are private or municipal and need permission. State law protects archaeological sites and unmarked graves.
