BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: New Hampshire · approx. 43.38, -72.34 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Sugar River near its mouth at the Connecticut River

What turns up: Machine-shop and textile-mill refuse: aqua and amber bottles, local druggist and soda bottles, ironstone and stoneware sherds, clay pipes, and buttons and coins in privy pits and dumps along the Sugar River falls and Broad and Water Streets.

Access: Gray area.

New Hampshire framing: the beds of the navigable Sugar River and the nearby Connecticut River below the ordinary high-water mark are state-owned and removing historic artifacts there is restricted. Mill-lot and riverbank uplands are private and need the owner's permission. State law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
