BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Maryland · approx. 39.53, -75.81 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1900s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Straddles the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal at the upper Chesapeake Bay; 19th-century canal port.

What turns up: Canal-era debris along the old C&D Canal basin and lock: boatmen's and tavern dumps, stoneware, clay pipes, and embossed local druggist, soda, and beer bottles near the waterfront and pump-house works.

Access: Gray area.

The C&D Canal is a federal navigable waterway and its bed and banks can hold protected submerged and archaeological resources; disturbing them is restricted, and removal below mean high water on state public-trust bottom is limited. Town uplands are private and need permission.
