Chattanooga (Tennessee River)

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Tennessee · approx. 35.05, -85.31 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Tennessee River, at Moccasin Bend and the old Ross's Landing wharf

What turns up: Ross's Landing riverbank and shallows: hand-blown bottles, stoneware, clay pipes, and iron-industry and steamboat debris; 1880s to 1900s dump layers eroding from the bank, plus privy bottles behind old Market Street lots.

Access: Gray area.

The Tennessee River bed below the ordinary high-water mark is state public-trust bottomland where artifact removal is restricted; the landing and uplands are city or private and require permission. Because Chattanooga is ringed by protected Civil War ground, relic hunting on or near battlefield land is heavily restricted; verify boundaries first.
