Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Gulf of Mexico island cluster; a Gulf railroad terminus and fishing port

What turns up: Cedar-mill and fishing port that boomed as a Gulf rail terminus. Expect 1880s pontil and Hutchinson bottles, pencil-mill refuse, and coins in shell middens, dock fill, and old town lots.

Access: Gray area.

Florida framing: the surrounding Gulf bottom and the tidelands below the mean high-water line are state-owned sovereignty submerged land with restricted artifact removal, and Florida law strongly protects archaeological and historical resources on state land; many nearby islands are also protected refuge or state land. Town uplands are usually private and need the landowner's permission. State law protects unmarked burials.
