BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Rhode Island · approx. 41.69, -71.27 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Bristol Harbor on the east side of Narragansett Bay

What turns up: A prosperous colonial and China-trade seaport. Along the old harbor blocks and back-lot privies look for sealed black-glass bottles, early utility and beer bottles, whiteware and pipe fragments, and later ale and soda bottles from the 1800s waterfront taverns and stores.

Access: Gray area.

Rhode Island reserves public rights along the shore, and tidelands and navigable-water beds are state public-trust land where artifact removal is restricted. Harbor-side uplands are usually private and need the owner's permission. State law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials. Check with the RI Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission before any shore digging.
