BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: New Hampshire · approx. 44.47, -71.19 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Androscoggin River

What turns up: Pulp-and-paper boomtown refuse: aqua and amber bottles, embossed soda and druggist bottles, stoneware and ironstone sherds, clay pipes, and immigrant-worker buttons and coins in privy pits and dumps along the Androscoggin gorge and the mill-side tenement streets.

Access: Gray area.

New Hampshire framing: the bed of the navigable Androscoggin River below the ordinary high-water mark is state-owned and removing historic artifacts there is restricted. Mill-yard and riverbank uplands are private and need the owner's permission. State law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
