Where: Florida · approx. 29.73, -84.99 (vicinity only)
Why this spot: 1890s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Apalachicola Bay and the mouth of the Apalachicola River on the Gulf coast
What turns up: Antebellum cotton port that became an oyster and sponge town. Expect pre-1900 medicine and beer bottles, oyster-house and cannery refuse, and steamboat-landing dumps along the riverbank and old cotton-warehouse district.
Access: Gray area.
Florida framing: the bay and river beds and the tidelands below the mean high-water line are state-owned sovereignty submerged land where removing historic artifacts is restricted, and Florida law strongly protects archaeological and historical resources on state land. Riverfront uplands are usually private and need the landowner's permission. State law protects unmarked burials.
