Where: Wisconsin · approx. 44.61, -87.43 (vicinity only)
Why this spot: 1900s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Ahnapee River
What turns up: Fishing-village and brewery bottles, Hutchinson and crown-top sodas, ginger beer bottles, and druggist bottles; the town appears in earlier LOC editions under its former name Ahnapee.
Access: Gray area.
Wisconsin holds the bed of the Great Lakes below the ordinary high-water mark in public trust, so removing historic artifacts from the submerged lakebed is restricted and generally not permitted without state authorization; the townsite banks, beaches above the line, and uplands are usually privately owned and require the landowner's permission; state law also protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
