Why this spot

1837-1860 river landing and Lowndes County seat

Lowndes County's third seat, at the head of navigation where the Withlacoochee and Little rivers meet, with three hotels, four stores, three churches and a newspaper at its peak. When the railroad bypassed it in 1858 and the courthouse was burned, residents moved their houses to the new town of Valdosta, and by 1874 the site was an old field.View source →
