Why this spot

1870-1892 Fourierist silk colony

Frenchman Ernest de Boissiere founded Silkville in 1870 as a cooperative colony raising silkworms, with a 60-room manor house, a stone cocoonery, school and thousands of mulberry trees, and its silk won praise at the 1876 Centennial Exposition. Competition from cheaper Asian silk and departing members ended the colony, and Boissiere returned to France in 1892.View source →
