Why this spot

1837-1843 cotton port and railroad terminus

A river port on the east bank of the St. Marks River that shipped Red Hills cotton by rail and wagon, with wharves, warehouses, a hotel, two taverns and a newspaper serving several hundred people. It became the Wakulla County seat in March 1843, then a hurricane with a 10-foot surge destroyed it that September and residents moved inland to Newport.View source →
