Why this spot

1884-1942 desert gold mining town

Gold camp that grew from Peter Walters' 1884 Gold Rock strike into Hedges, peaking at about 3,200 residents between 1893 and 1899 around the Golden Cross mine and stamp mill. Nearly closed from 1900, it reopened as Tumco in 1910 and was worked on and off until 1942, when only 30 people remained.View source →
