Why this spot

1870s-1890s logging and charcoal boom, unincorporated 1937

Hard-scrabble mountain town that boomed after 1872 when a mountain railroad up Bolles Brook opened the timber, with sawmills at Fayville and South Glastenbury and dozens of charcoal kilns feeding iron works; it had 241 people in 1880. The forest was cut out by the late 1880s, a short-lived 1898 resort was ended by a freshet that destroyed the tracks, and the town was unincorporated in 1937.View source →
