Why this spot

1867-1960s African American village

Founded after the Civil War when Jean Pierre Fazende sold lots to freed slaves, the village had general stores, a one-room school, benevolent societies and a Baptist church along Fazendeville Road. It was razed in the 1960s to expand the Chalmette battlefield park.View source →
