Why this spot

1820-1838 county seat and cotton port, abandoned by 1933

Erie was the first seat of Greene County and a cotton shipping port on a bend of the Black Warrior River, with stores, a hotel, a jail and about 1,500 people. It faded after the seat moved to Eutaw in 1838, helped along by yellow fever and floods, and its last house burned in 1933.View source →
