Why this spot

1917-1921 World War I potash boomtown

Five potash plants drew water from Sandhills alkaline lakes at Antioch during World War I, swelling the hamlet to over 5,000 people by spring 1918. Cheaper German and French potash returned in 1921, the plants closed at once, and machinery, buildings and company housing were scrapped or moved.View source →
