Nagano: Wada Pass obsidian (Higashi-mochiya roadside)

ROCKHOUNDING RESTRICTED DOCUMENTED

Where: Japan · Asia · approx. 36.17, 138.15 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: Rockhounding locality: Paleolithic Japan's premier obsidian source; today only loose roadside chips are picked, and only ambiguously

What turns up: obsidian chips, rhyolite; garnet localities nearby are closed

Access: Restricted.

The Hoshikuso Pass quarry complex is a protected National Historic Site with no removal, stream diggings are signed against collecting, and the area lies in a quasi-national park; some visitors pick loose 2-3 cm roadside chips near the Higashi-mochiya ruins, which remains legally murky, so treat this mainly as a look-only site and use the Hoshikuso museum
