Motagua Valley, Guatemala: Maya jade source region

ROCKHOUNDING GRAY AREA DOCUMENTED

Where: Central America · North America · approx. 14.92, -89.87 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: Rockhounding locality: the middle Motagua fault valley holds Mesoamerica's only jadeitite source, quarried by Olmec and Maya lapidaries and rediscovered by geologists in the 1950s

What turns up: eyes-only in the field: jadeitite float in tributary gravels, serpentinite; buy jadeite carvings and rough at workshops

Access: Gray area.

Jade-bearing ground is private and community land with commercially guarded quarry areas, and ancient quarry sites are cultural patrimony; the honest route is river-viewing plus buying certified Motagua jade at licensed Guatemalan workshops
