Boyaca: Chivor emerald mining district

ROCKHOUNDING RESTRICTED DOCUMENTED

Where: Andes · South America · approx. 4.89, -73.37 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: Rockhounding locality: Muisca-then-Spanish emerald mines rediscovered in 1886, source of the Patricia and other named stones, in green canyon country east of Bogota

What turns up: emerald in matrix and cut stones (guided-tour purchases), pyrite, quartz; eyes-only in workings

Access: Restricted.

Mines are private concessions: visit only on locally guided tunnel-and-tailings tours arranged in Chivor town, buy stones through vetted dealers with paperwork, and do not fossick tailings yourself; guaquero picking is a local custom, not a visitor right
