Barkly West: Vaal River diamond diggings

ROCKHOUNDING RESTRICTED DOCUMENTED

Where: South Africa · Africa · approx. -28.54, 24.52 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: Rockhounding locality: site of South Africa's first great diamond rush (Klipdrift, 1870) on the Vaal River gravels; small licensed alluvial diggers still work claims in the district

What turns up: eyes-only: rush-era diggings, Stone Age artefact layers, Toll House museum; agates and jasper pebbles occur in river gravel outside protected ground

Access: Restricted.

Canteen Kopje is a proclaimed heritage reserve (protected since 1948, grade 2, approved 2017 for national grading): strictly eyes-only; river claims belong to licensed diggers, so any pan-and-sieve visit needs a claim holder's invitation
