Aboriginal relics are strongly protected under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1975 and must never be disturbed. Digging on private land needs the owner's permission; fossicking needs the correct permit and is only allowed in designated areas, with Crown land, reserves and national parks restricted or off limits. Port Arthur is a World Heritage listed convict site where all ground disturbance is strictly prohibited.
