Historical relics and archaeological deposits are protected under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 and much of the Palmer field is heritage-listed mining landscape; Aboriginal cultural heritage is strongly protected under the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 and must never be disturbed. The field lies in reserves and Crown land where digging is restricted, private land needs the owner's permission, and a Queensland fossicking licence for gold applies only in designated fossicking areas. This is not free digging.
