Historical relics and archaeological deposits are protected under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992, and Aboriginal cultural heritage is strongly protected under the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 and must never be disturbed. Old workings and river reserves are mainly Crown land where digging is restricted; private land needs the owner's permission and a Queensland fossicking licence for gold applies only in designated areas. This is not free digging.
