Aboriginal cultural heritage is strongly protected under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and must never be disturbed. Digging on private land needs the owner's permission; prospecting or fossicking needs a current Miner's Right and is only allowed in permitted areas, with Crown land, reserves and parks restricted or off limits. The Echuca Wharf precinct is a listed heritage place.
